Here is the beginning of my cello CD list. This is an attempt to help young cellists and their parents build a great collection of cello recordings. Hopefully the library will help you to learn about the major repertoire and introduce you to the great cellists of past and present. These are
must have recordings. I grew up with most of these performances, and they are my personal favorites. I will tell you why I chose each disc and where you can find it.
Let's start with the piece you just heard. That's right - - -
The Big D. - - - This is the Dvorak cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104. This is our most famous concerto. This piece has it all, from riveting technical passages to soaring A-string melodies, you just can't get better cello writing. There are literally dozens of great recordings of this piece. I can think of 4 different recordings by
Rostropovich alone. His recording with the Berlin Philharmonic and Karajan is probably the first choice of most cellists, but I prefer Lynn Harrell's recording. It was my first Dvorak (I have many), and I still get a chill every time I hear Harrell's first entrance.
Lynn Harrell is a cellist's cellist. While he can play as refined and as delicately as anybody, he plays with more guts and power than anyone. He has an in your face, in the string sound and attitude. You will hear his bow dragging across and hitting the strings. This style of playing is perfect for Dvorak, and Harrell delivers the goods.
